TECH TALK

DSG EXPLAINED

What does DSG stand for?

DSG (Direkt Schalt Getriebe) stands for “Direct-Shift Gearbox” or “Direct-Sequential Gearbox”. It is an advanced type of automatic transmission often used in modern cars from the Volkswagen AG group (VAG).

A DSG transmission is a type of automatic transmission that combines the benefits of both manual and automatic shifting. DSG transmissions are designed to combine the benefits of a manual transmission, such as efficiency and direct control, with the convenience, fast shift times and efficient performance of an automatic transmission.

It uses two separate clutches for even and odd gears, making it possible to shift quickly and smoothly without the loss of drive power sometimes associated with traditional automatic transmissions.

Let’s take a closer look at the technical aspects of a DSG gearbox

1. Dual-clutch system:

  • A DSG transmission has two clutches: one for the even gears and one for the odd gears.
  • Each clutch is connected to its own set of gears.
  • While one clutch is active and the car is driving in a given gear, the other clutch prepares for the next shift.

2. Electronic control:

  • A complex computer system controls the operation of the DSG transmission.
  • Sensors measure various parameters such as speed, accelerator pedal position, brake use and more.
  • Based on this data, the computer system calculates the optimal shift point and which clutch to use.

3. Fast and seamless shifting:

  • Shifting happens very quickly and with virtually no interruption of drive power.
  • When a shift is needed, one clutch disengages while the other clutch engages.
  • These fast shift times contribute to a sporty driving experience.

4. Efficiency and fuel savings:

  • Because the transmission can shift quickly and efficiently, this contributes to better fuel efficiency.
  • The reduced energy loss during shifting contributes to the car’s overall efficiency.

5. Manual control mode:

  • Many DSG transmissions offer manual control via shift paddles behind the steering wheel or a special mode on the gear lever.
  • In this mode, the driver can shift manually, creating a more engaged driving experience.

6. Maintenance and cooling:

  • DSG transmissions require specific transmission oil with the correct specifications.
  • Cooling is essential for the proper functioning of the transmission, especially under intensive use or in demanding conditions.

7. Adaptive learning systems:

  • Some DSG systems adapt to the driver’s driving behaviour and learn their preferences.
  • This can result in an adapted shifting pattern for a more personalised driving experience.

All in all, a DSG gearbox combines advanced mechanics with electronics to strike a balance between performance, efficiency and ease of use. It is a technological feat that is increasingly used in modern cars.
