How do you use AdBlue?

AdBlue is used as a reducing agent in SCR systems to reduce harmful emissions from diesel engines, read more about this in our article, wat is AdBlue. But how do you use AdBlue?

Use

AdBlue is a very easy to use and harmless substance. It is a clear, non-toxic and non-flammable fluid. It consists of high-quality urea and demineralised water, which undergoes a production process to meet the required specifications set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Internationally, AdBlue is also referred to as DEF – Diesel Exhaust Fluid.

AdBlue is classified as a liquid fluid with minimal risk. It must be stored in a cool and dry place, well away from sunlight and extreme temperatures. It is important to avoid contact with painted surfaces as this can cause discolouration or damage. Should you ever get AdBlue on your hands, washing with water is sufficient.

Application

To top up AdBlue in the vehicle, follow these steps:

It is important to know where the AdBlue tank is located in the vehicle, as the location can vary depending on the make and model. If necessary, consult the vehicle’s manual for specific instructions regarding the use of AdBlue.

When the AdBlue reservoir is nearly empty, a warning light often comes on and you can usually still drive around 2,400 kilometres. However, we advise against doing so. If the AdBlue runs out completely, engine performance drops sharply and your car will refuse to start again. Therefore, top up the reservoir as soon as possible after the warning light comes on.
Open the filler cap of the AdBlue tank. Often a blue cap marked with AdBlue or the AdBlue symbol near the fuel cap or hidden under the boot floor or bonnet.
Pour the AdBlue slowly into the tank using the supplied filling hose. If the AdBlue reservoir is nearly empty, you need to top up at least four litres. However, do not fill the tank completely, and do not top up the reservoir before the warning light comes on. If you pour too much AdBlue into the tank, the fluid can overflow and crystallise, which can cause a blocked filler neck and a deformed reservoir.
Close the filler cap firmly once the tank is full to prevent leakage.
Start the vehicle’s engine and let it run for a few minutes. This helps distribute the AdBlue evenly in the SCR system.
After topping up AdBlue, in some cases the onboard computer needs to be reset to turn off the warning light.
